Verification work can be a critical component to your background screening program. Verifications allow for information to be confirmed while other information may be divulged, information that could be detrimental to an organization should it not be uncovered. This could range from someone embellishing their education, stating they have a Master’s degree in Business Administration instead of the Bachelor’s they actually hold. Or someone could lie about their title, claiming a position that denotes much more expertise and responsibility than they have in reality. Some individuals will even go so far as to fictionalize a job tenure to cover a gap of unemployment on their resume.
All of this can add up to hiring an individual that is unqualified or underqualified, a move that could be costly to a business after the investment of salary, benefits, time spent training, and lost production. By adding verifications of education, employment, and professional licenses held, Hiring Managers can rule out any falsified records and protect their organization from exposure to a subpar and/or toxic employee.
At TruView, we believe our TRUverification is the industry best practice for education or employment verifications. We conduct three attempts at a verification, but we focus on direct contact with the employer. Our rule is three attempts over three days at three different times over three different mediums (email, fax, phone, secondary email). If unable to make contact, we reach out to the applicant (or HR) for additional contact information or for secondary sources of verification, such as a W-2, payroll stubs from the first and last dates of employment, etc. This method helps ensure no verifications are closed as unable to verify. A third-party verification is used only as a last resort to limit the employer’s exposure to this fee. For Education Verification, we work through multiple alternate sources, to include District Offices, Public Repositories, and the Board of Education, to name a few, while providing consistent feedback to our Clients on any use of alternate sources and/or delays.
These alternate methods of verification are critical in the post COVID-19 workspace. Many businesses have shut their doors altogether, making verification a difficult task. Others are short staffed, leading to extended turnaround times, while still others are continuing to work remote, an action that may lead to a lack of access to personnel records. Having a background screening firm that goes the extra mile for you in this environment can mean the difference between a great candidate and one who isn’t who they say they are.
The advent of new technologies and further development of existing ones brings interesting concepts to the verification field. Machine learning and artificial intelligence programs can be taught to process a verification, eventually leading to a high level of automation and reduced turnaround times. However, we at TruView believe that there will always be a place for human analysis in verifications, to ensure that the information gleaned by AI meets the maximum possible accuracy threshold.
The introduction of blockchain technology also presents as a significant development to the future of verifications. In one possible scenario using this platform, individuals would seek out a vetted background screening company to verify all of their information. Once their background has been completed, it would be the individual that controls the release of their personal information directly to companies utilizing the same blockchain. The exchange could potentially be done through a type of cryptocurrency, whereby individuals either pay to submit their information, or employers pay to request it’s release by the applicant. Either way, this one-time, centralized repository of vetted information could revolutionize the way verification work is done in the not-so-distant future.
One thing is certain: Whatever the future holds, the need for human analysis will remain prevalent in the world of background screening. As a company “Born of Tradition, Enabled by Technology, and Powered by People,” you can trust that TruView will stay on the cutting edge of any and all developments in our space.
